Now, why a meeting of adults
Should
open with the pledge
Is
something that feels wrong to me
And
sets my teeth on edge.
As
children, we recited it
Assembly
days in school
And
when I taught, each morning
In
the classroom was the rule.
Just
like the anthem, kids should learn
The
words that we recite
On
those occasions when it is
Appropriate
and right.
To
me, a meeting of the board
Where
I retain a home
Is
not one of those times and that’s
The
reason for this poem.
