Headache

Little hammers tapping
In the space behind my eyes
Warn me that there’s more to come
As pain intensifies.

It isn’t quite a migraine –
Likely it’s induced by stress –
Yet that knowledge gives no comfort
Nor does it hurt any less.

Advil often takes the edge off
By providing quick relief;
There are times, though, such a respite’s
Non-existent or too brief.

Headaches all my life have plagued me
So I know that it will fade,
But ‘til then there’s no escaping
All those hammers on parade.
