Our parents take us just so far
And
then we find our way,
No
longer captive to the rules
They
taught us to obey.
So
where we live or what we eat
Or
wear or do for fun
Must
be decided by ourselves
And
vetoed by no one.
Our
choices may surprise or shock
Or
anger, I suppose,
But
that’s the way it’s always been
And
how it mostly goes.
Though
parents may expect their kids
To
their own lives conform,
Embracing
quite the opposite
May
often be the norm.
