I'm staring at the ocean
While Houston's in the news,
But I and many Texans
Have quite different water views.
The Lone Star state's been flooded
By a savage hurricane
With the cars submerged or floating
In the lakes made by the rain.
In Oregon all beaches
Have evacuation signs
For tsunamis, since escape routes
Are in every town's designs.
Though the locals do not fret about
This possibility
All the warnings are quite jarring
To a visitor like me.
What's happening in Texas
Is a sad and awful loss
Which reminds us that, as always,
It is Nature who's the boss.
